One morning I was surprised to receive three extraordinary gifts.
The first gift I opened was a telescope. The card attached said, “Telescopes see into the past. The starlight kissing the telescope lens and dazzling the eye began the journey lightyears ago.”
I understood this telescope would provide clear images from my past. Memories from our journey sometimes dominate our vision and obscure our awareness of the present. Nonetheless, our past contains jewels. In the past we experienced moments of joy, love, and peace – precious gems indeed. However, our history also includes unwelcome memories that hurt our tender heart or confuse our mind. I accept that my past shaped the person I am today, and I am grateful for that. We recall our past to remember the best moments and to consider the lessons learned on the journey.
The second gift is an anchor. The card says, “This anchor holds you securely in the present.”
Receiving this gift, I feel deep joy knowing that the present—the moment of this breath, is the only time in which consciousness exists. I take a deep breath and know that this moment is when the power of choice is present. I recognize that the choice I make right now determines what I think and how I feel. Mindful power and life energy exist only now. I take another deep breath absorbing this anchor into my body and mind. From this moment on, to bring my attention to the present, I simply take a deep breath. My breath is my anchor. It is always here in the present.
The third gift I opened was a crystal sailboat. A colorful and beautifully decorated card says, “Board this ship with imagination and sail joyfully into the future.”
I am excited and delighted with this gift of wonder! Imagination is our power to create. Having a vision or a mission leads us onward adding purpose and joy to life. I know that where I am and where I wish to be are fused together, so I take the anchor aboard with me. The anchor reminds me not to spend all my time sailing here and there. It’s wise to be still, and the benefits of presence are valuable. The freedom to chart my course onward using my imagination is cherished beyond words.
I closed my eyes for a moment to give thanks for these gifts. Suddenly I saw a vision of the three items perfectly balanced. On one side of the scale is the telescope and on the other side the crystal sailboat. In the center, bringing balance to it all – an anchor in the present.
